A personal look at The Artisan Hotel Istanbul - MGallery Collection through a luxury girls’ trip shaped by Istanbul’s beauty and thoughtful hospitality.

Istanbul has this absolutely magical way of making even the most ordinary moment feel totally cinematic. 

You leave your hotel with one plan, then suddenly, you’re walking past a palace gate, catching a glimpse of the Bosphorus Strait between buildings, smelling fresh simit from a street cart, and wondering “is it reasonable to stop for yet another coffee today?” (In Istanbul, it’s almost never unreasonable to stop for coffee again, by the way).

For a girls’ trip to Istanbul with two of my friends, we wanted a stay that felt indulgent without feeling detached from the city around us. We were searching for the kind of hotel where we could return after long days of wandering and feel immediately restored, all while still sensing that Istanbul was right outside the door.

After all, that was the whole point of the trip: to be as immersed in the city as we possibly could.

A girls’ trip needs comfort, of course, since nobody wants to negotiate counter space with three toiletry bags and a curling iron while running late for dinner. It also needs atmosphere, because the hotel becomes part of the story as much as the restaurants, museums, waterfront walks, and late-night conversations do.

That balance is what made The Artisan Hotel Istanbul - MGallery Collection, part of the Accor Group, such a memorable base for our trip.

Set in the Gümüşsuyu neighbourhood, close to Taksim Square and the Bosphorus, the hotel felt luxurious in a way that suited Istanbul beautifully. It was elegant, artful, calm, and deeply connected to its district, which gave our stay a sense of place from the moment that we arrived.

The Artisan Istanbul MGallery feels like a hotel that understands the city to which it belongs, not relying on anonymous luxury…you know, the kind where the lobby could be in any major city and the room could belong to any well-polished international address.

Instead, the hotel draws from the creative spirit of Gümüşsuyu, a neighbourhood shaped by Art Nouveau influence, Baroque details, and a cultural history tied to artists and intellectuals. That connection gives the hotel a strong identity, which matters in a destination as layered as Istanbul. These also just happen to be two of my favourite design movements, so that definitely earned aesthetic brownie points from me.

The artistic personality of the property reveals itself slowly as you move through the space. More than 100 art pieces are placed throughout the hotel, creating the feeling of a private collection you have the privilege to discover, rather than a decorative afterthought. It made us pause as we dashed out from our room between plans, which is always a sign that a hotel has done something right.

Three women on a full Istanbul itinerary are not easily slowed down, especially when there is food involved, yet both the art and design invited us to pause and look closer.

There’s a quiet confidence to the interiors that makes the hotel feel upscale without becoming overly formal; the design is modern, though it still carries traces of the neighbourhood’s architectural heritage, and that relationship between past and present suits Istanbul perfectly.

This is a city where centuries overlap constantly, so staying somewhere that reflects that same layered beauty made the experience feel more meaningful.

As a boutique hotel in Istanbul, The Artisan has the personality I always hope to find during a holiday. It feels intimate and polished, with enough visual character to make the property memorable in its own right. For travellers who care about where they stay as much as what they see, that makes a real difference. 

While here, you’ll find too, that the hotel becomes more than a place to sleep—it becomes the setting for the small moments that make a trip feel personal. For us, this ranged from returning in the evening slightly tired yet simultaneously charged with the energy of the city to standing in the lobby before dinner while one of us inevitably checked whether her lipstick was still unsmudged.

A Location Made for Wandering

Choosing where to stay in Istanbul can feel overwhelming because the city is enormous. It’s also layered and full of neighbourhoods that each offer their own version of the experience.

For our trip, Gümüşsuyu turned out to be an excellent choice, because it gave us a comfortable base near some of the city’s most recognizable points, while still allowing the hotel to feel tucked into a neighbourhood with its own character.

The location worked especially well for three people, because it allowed us to be spontaneous. We could move easily toward Taksim Square when we wanted energy, head toward the Bosphorus when we wanted more ‘natural’ views, and reach Dolmabahçe Palace without turning the day into a logistical puzzle.

This matters on a girls’ trip, because the best parts of travelling with friends often happen between plans. Someone sees a café that looks cute, someone else suggests one more photo, and suddenly, the afternoon has rearranged itself in the best possible way.

That said, being close to the Bosphorus gave the stay a sense of glamour that felt unmistakably Istanbul. There’s something about the water here that makes the entire city feel more dramatic, especially when the light begins to change and everything takes on that soft gold glow.

Staying at an Istanbul hotel near the strait meant that the city’s most iconic view never felt far away, which made even quick outings feel special. Not every stay in the city offers this, and it’s something we didn’t take for granted!

The hotel’s proximity to Taksim also made it practical without sacrificing the feeling of an extravagant escape. As a luxury hotel near Taksim Square, The Artisan gave us access to a lively part of the city while still offering a calm return at the end of the day. We could go out, explore, eat far more than necessary, and come back to a space that felt composed and welcoming.

That contrast between Istanbul’s movement and the hotel’s tranquillity gave the trip a rhythm that worked beautifully.

For anyone trying to figure out where to stay in Istanbul, this part of the city makes sense if you want convenience with a more refined atmosphere. We were close enough to major landmarks, transport connections, cafés, restaurants, and shopping areas to keep each day flexible, which is exactly what we needed.

Istanbul rewards curiosity, and staying somewhere well placed meant we could follow that curiosity without constantly checking travel times or reconsidering whether our shoes were a terrible idea.

Room Views and Getting Ready Together

Sharing a hotel room with two friends can either feel like an amazing travel memory you’ll cherish forever or a minor endurance sport. Happily, our room at The Artisan made it feel like the former.

There was enough comfort for all three of us to settle in properly, and the space became the kind of easy, relaxed headquarters every girls’ trip needs. It was where we unpacked too much, talked through the next day’s plans, compared outfits, and pretended we were going to be ready in ten minutes when everyone involved knew that that was a sweet little fantasy.

The room design continued the hotel’s overall feeling of understated luxury. It was elegant without being stiff, comfortable without being forgettable, and spacious enough for three women to move through the rituals of getting ready without turning the room into a beauty-product obstacle course. That may sound like a small detail, though anyone who has ever shared a room before dinner knows that it is actually a major hospitality achievement.

The views made the experience feel even more special: the Artisan’s rooms look toward the Bosphorus or the cityscape (ours faced the city), and that sense of Istanbul outside the window added whimsy to our stay.

There’s something so grounding about waking up in a beautiful hotel and remembering exactly where you are before the day begins. After waking up in our three separate single beds (which made for a way better sleep, if we're being honest!), the view became part of our morning routine, serving as a little reminder that we were in one of the most extraordinary cities in the whole world, and we finally were able to visit it.

The room also gave us space to slow down between outings, which is one of the most underrated bonuses on a busy city trip.

Istanbul is thrilling, but it admittedly asks a lot from your feet, your attention, and your ability to politely decline one more shopkeeper who believes you desperately need a carpet. Coming back to the hotel in the afternoon felt like a deep exhale; we could properly rest and recharge before heading out again.

For a friends’ trip, the comfort of the room matters because so much of the bonding happens there. It’s in the half-finished conversations while someone is doing her hair, the laughter over suitcase chaos, and the post-dinner debriefs when everyone is tired enough to be extra honest.

The Art of a Beautiful Istanbul Breakfast

Breakfast in Istanbul deserves to be treated as an event, and at The Artisan, it felt like one. The hotel’s morning experience is inspired by Anatolian flavours, with an emphasis on local ingredients, seasonal produce, and Turkish culinary traditions.

Instead of feeling like a standard hotel breakfast that could be copied and pasted into any destination, it felt connected to the city, which made each morning more enjoyable.

There’s a particular pleasure in beginning the day with a Bosphorus view. Morning in Istanbul, Türkiye has its own mood, especially when the city is slowly coming alive and the water seems to hold the light differently with every passing minute.

Having breakfast in that setting made us linger over our oat milk lattes, which became a recurring morning theme of the trip. We’d sit down with good intentions about timing, then somehow find ourselves still talking, still sipping, and still looking out at the view as if Istanbul had personally asked us to stay a little longer. And who are we to say “no”?

What made it so special was that our incredible waitress every morning remembered our order and asked as soon as we walked in to our usual table, "Three oat milk lattes?" Again, it's those little things that matter so much and make a stay that much more memorable.

The food experience added a lifestyle element to the stay that suited the trip perfectly. A luxury hotel should make meals feel effortless, and The Artisan did exactly that.

We enjoyed an expansive buffet with both sweet and salty options (I had a little pastry, berry yogurt with granola, and beets with baby bocconcini every morning, among other things), along with an item from the hot menu. We tried something new each morning and it was all fantastic, from the eggs benedict (that was my favourite) to crêpes to traditional Turkish börek.

Art&Kitchen also brought another layer to the culinary side of the stay; the space reflects the hotel’s artistic identity, while the food and drinks tie into its commitment to local sourcing and modern interpretations of tradition.

For three friends travelling together, having a stylish place within the hotel for a cocktail or a relaxed meal added ease to the experience. There is a special kind of happiness in not needing to research another address when you’re already dressed, hungry, and debating whether your heels are worth the commitment once you step out onto the street.

The dining experience at The Artisan also reinforced the hotel’s sense of meaningful indulgence. It wasn’t about excess for the sake of excess—it felt rooted in the destination, shaped by regional flavours, and presented in a way that made each meal feel considered.

In a city known for its food culture, that truly does matter.

Sunset Dinner at Topaz Restaurant

One of the experiences we were most looking forward to during our stay was dinner at Topaz Restaurant, the hotel’s Michelin-recommended fine-dining restaurant set on the terrace with a sweeping view of the Bosphorus.

We planned our reservation around sunset on our final night in Istanbul, which felt like the only correct choice in a city that knows exactly how to make golden hour dramatic. Istanbul already has a habit of turning dinner into something memorable, though Topaz adds that extra sense of occasion, with the water below, the skyline shifting in the evening light, and the kind of setting that makes everyone at the table reach for their phone before the first cocktail arrives.

Topaz has been welcoming guests in Gümüşsuyu with a fine-dining concept since 2007, and its atmosphere feels polished without losing warmth. The restaurant brings together contemporary Mediterranean cuisine by Tevfik Alparslan with a comfortable, modern dining room, a terrace surrounded by greenery, and a cocktail bar facing the Bosphorus.

From the moment we entered the restaurant, our waiter Can made our night memorable.

While visiting, we ordered signature cocktails to start, all at Can's recommendations given our individual preferred flavour preferences: me, a smooth but sour Moonstone, and my friends, a fruity Karnelyan and fresh, citrusy Tremolite. All three were amazing, which was confirmed as we took sips of each others.

For dinner, we took the chef's degustation menu with five glasses of matching Turkish wines, my friends the regular version and myself, the vegan version (complete with vegan wines!).

My meal included:

• An amuse bouche of hummus with candied walnuts and a delicious red lentil soup on the side

• ‘Urla’ young artichoke & fermented sea beans with smoked Anatolian pepper foam (paired with Pamukkale Artı sauvignon blanc from Denizli, 2024)

• Sakiz squash & roasted peppers ravioli with wrinkled tomatoes, vegan cheese, and almond milk (paired with Kavaklıdere Egeo Roze from Denizli, 2024)

• Gold leaf faux gras with truffle and peanut pâté, with fermented cranberry leather and sourdough brioche (paired with Kuzubağ Çalkarası from Denizli, 2024)

• Satsuma sorbet to cleanse the palate

• Chargrilled asparagus with a morel mushroom stuffed with truffle red potato (paired with Likya pinot noir from Antalya, 2023)

• Seasonal fruit sorbets (paired with Pamukkale Mulier Misket, semi sweet, from Denizli, 2024)

For my friends, their meal consisted of:

• Pike fish roe and cream on a rice crispy cracker with a mushroom and tartufo soup on the side

• ‘Çanakkale’ yellowfin tuna & avocado with fermented cilantro relish and caviar jelly (paired with Yedi Bilgeler Khilon sauvignon blanc from Denizli, 2024)

• Seared king scallop with carrot fondant, trumpet mushroom, langoustine consommé (paired with Doluca Signium Rosé merlot pinot noir from Saroz, 2023)

• Three-step stuffed lamb piruhi with young wild tomato and sage butter (paired with Likya Arkeo from Acıkara, 2021)

• A seasonal fruit sorbet to cleanse the palate

• Taurus mountain goat kid shoulder with root herbs, firik wheat keskek, and fermented trumpet mushroom (paired with Kavaklıdere Pendore Esprit des Sommeliers from Manisa, 2022)

• Licorice and passion fruit parfaits of fermented wild berries, and hibiscus sorbet (paired with Kavaklıdere Tatlı Sert Narince from Tokat, 2012)

That said, one of my friends has a serious garlic allergy, and they accommodated her effortlessly and without having to drastically change her meal.

For a girls’ trip, it felt like the perfect dinner plan: elegant enough to make the evening feel special, relaxed enough to settle in properly, and scenic enough to make us collectively forgive ourselves for taking approximately seventy photos before sitting down.

Wellness and Sustainability with Soul

Luxury feels different now than it used to. Beautiful rooms and polished service still matter, of course, because nobody books a bespoke stay hoping for scratchy towels and emotional resilience…yet, the best hotels also understand that comfort should come with care, both for the guest and for the place they are visiting.

The hotel’s fitness room is open around the clock, which is ideal for travellers who like to keep some routine while away. I admire these people deeply (and from a distance). For those with more discipline than I personally possess before breakfast, it means the day can begin with movement in a refined, energizing setting. For the rest of us, simply knowing the option exists feels spiritually productive.

What gives The Artisan even more depth is its commitment to sustainability; the hotel is proudly GSTC certified and has also been awarded an ecolabel by an external, independent organization, reflecting Accor’s broader work with respected sustainability labels.

The hotel’s comfort did not feel separate from responsibility. It felt shaped by a more mindful way of travelling, which is increasingly important for guests like myself who want beautiful experiences without ignoring the impact of tourism.
