Some cities greet you with a handshake, but Florence greets you with the sort of beauty that makes you rethink every life choice that kept you away from it until now. Especially when you’re staying at Hotel La Gemma, Florence’s gem.

I learned this the moment I arrived for a girls’ weekend with one of my closest friends. It was my first time in Florence, let alone in the region of Tuscany, and after years of people urging me to go, I finally listened. We hopped on a train from Rome, bags in hand, and headed straight toward the trip that rewrote my definition of a perfect weekend getaway.

The decision to stay at Hotel La Gemma felt like stepping into a story that had been waiting for us. For a truly unique experience, this hotel is the perfect place to stay in Florence. Hotel La Gemma offers the ideal luxury location for travellers who want to explore every corner of the city with complete comfort, style, and that signature Italian warmth that makes you feel like family from the moment you arrive.

As soon as we walked through the doors, I knew we had picked the right home base for our short but incredible Florentine adventure.

Every beautiful stay begins with a space that feels thoughtfully built. At Hotel La Gemma, the artistry behind the interiors is impossible to ignore.

Designed by Elena and Giulia Sella of Milan’s Design by Gemini Studio, the hotel blends Art Deco elegance with Florentine heritage in a way that feels incredibly intentional. They drew inspiration from the tones of the Duomo, so the palette inside mirrors the city outside; it is something you feel before you even begin to process it.

Velvet upholstery, gleaming marble, and delicate bronze accents create an atmosphere that is grand without ever feeling stiff. Walking into it felt like stepping into a dreamscape shaped by soft textures and glowing light.

Each corner reveals evidence of the designers’ affection for Florence’s historic beauty. Curved lines soften the geometry of the rooms, while sculptural lighting adds depth. The materials were selected to echo the richness of Florentine craftsmanship. Even the corridors feel like part of the story.

You wander through them as if gliding through time, moving between eras via visual cues that celebrate both tradition and modernity. My friend and I spent an embarrassingly long time looking at the wallpaper textures, admiring the way natural light falls across the floors, and photographing nearly every detail.

The rooms follow the same thoughtful rhythm: Each one is individually designed to reflect Florence's spirit. Soft tones, artful detailing, and careful craftsmanship turn these spaces into intimate retreats that feel deeply personal. Beds are plush, linens are crisp, and amenities are carefully chosen to heighten comfort.

The walk-in showers offer a spa-level experience with rainfall water pressure that makes it tempting to stay under the stream until your fingers wrinkle. A minibar offers curated and delicious options for guests, while the soundproofing allows for complete rest, something I appreciated after a long day exploring the city on foot.

If you choose a suite, prepare for a heightened experience. They redefine contemporary Florentine living with bright open areas, bespoke furnishings, and thoughtful amenities. Many include loft spaces or two-bedroom configurations, and each one feels like the type of place where you could happily linger for a week.

At nearly 35 square metres (376 square feet), our Junior Suite with a King bed was incredibly comfortable and spacious for two people. Waking up here means opening your eyes to timeless design, Italian hospitality, and a view of Florence that makes you want to pinch yourself.

Pets are welcomed at La Gemma with the same affection offered to human guests. This is not the sort of place where a pet-friendly label is more symbolic than sincere, as they genuinely ensure your furry companion receives careful attention and comfort. It is another example of the thoughtful, heartfelt approach embedded in the hotel’s philosophy (and a great touch for an animal-lover like myself!)

Walking through the corridors, it feels as if generations have left their imprint; you sense the pride behind the details, the devotion behind every design choice, and the commitment to providing guests with meaningful hospitality.

The idea of being welcomed with the warmth given to family members is not a slogan here, but rather, it’s part of the hotel’s personality. You see it in the smiles of the staff, in the careful service, in the way the front desk remembers your favourite drink before you even ask for it again.

My friend and I both felt that staying here connected us to the city in a way a modern box-style hotel never could. We were living in a piece of history, one shaped by a family that sees hospitality as an extension of love.

Throughout our stay, this became clear through every action, every room we saw, and every moment that carried the brand’s signature refinement. They describe their philosophy as heartfelt luxury and personal service, and after spending a weekend here, I can confidently say this description is 100% accurate.

Their approach to hospitality involves detail without fuss, making you feel looked after, but never managed. You feel appreciated, but never overwhelmed. There is a spirit of ease woven into everything from the private check-in experience to the way the staff anticipates what you need before you even realize you need it.

One evening, as we chatted in the bar about which cocktail to try for aperitivo, the bartender Marta overheard us and gave us a series of recommendations based on flavour notes, freshness, and his personal favourites. That moment captured the character of La Gemma: Thoughtful, warm, and always in tune with its guests.

Within the city itself, Hotel La Gemma offers guided experiences that make exploring Florence incredibly rewarding. You can book walking tours through the historic centre, visits to artisan studios, or even a private tour of the famed Vasari Corridor. I was tempted by the Florentine Street Cuisine experience, which promised a journey through local flavours sure to make my taste buds very happy.

My friend felt drawn to the idea of crafting her own fragrance during the perfumery private tour. With only a weekend and a desire to drink in as much of Florence as possible, we stayed in the city and explored by foot, soaking up landmarks, aromas, and architectural masterpieces at every turn.

It’s no surprise that the spa is considered one of the property's highlights.

The Biologique Recherche experience is the crown jewel of Allure Spa, crafted around each guest’s unique needs through advanced Skin Instant analysis. Therapists design a personalized seven-step treatment that incorporates hydrotherapy, facial sculpting, and fragrance-free high-performance formulas.

Every motion feels intentional and every touch feels restorative. Mariantonietta left the treatment room with skin that glowed and a mind that felt lighter than it had in months, after her treatment with Vira.

Allure Spa also offers signature massages and couples rituals that invite reconnection for duos looking for a romantic getaway. These moments of shared calm are crafted with atmospheric lighting and expert techniques. They become memories as much as treatments.

After an hour relaxation massage with Marcela, I felt like I didn't have a single stress in the world, and was elated to be able to move straight from the massage bed and into the sauna for another 15 minutes of mind-clearing.

Various La Gemma spa packages combine beloved services to create full experiences for relaxation, preparation, or celebration. A beauty room adds the finishing touches with manicures, pedicures, threading, and waxing. It’s easy to spend hours here during a girls’ weekend getaway in Florence, drifting between steam rooms, saunas, and rest areas.

The spa encourages guests to slow down in a city that often inspires energetic exploration. There is something poetic about unwinding in a peaceful retreat before stepping back into Florence’s lively streets. The spa balances the city’s creative energy with deeply needed tranquillity.

Luca’s Restaurant and La Gemma Café: A Celebration of Flavour

Food is one of Florence’s greatest joys. When the food is served inside a property like Hotel La Gemma, the joy becomes something even brighter.

Each morning we had an amazing breakfast on-site, complete with fresh juices and smoothies, strong coffee, an assortment of pastries and either French toast (Saturday morning selection) made-to-order eggs (my Sunday morning choice). Regardless of what we chose, both of us felt full and ready to take on a day of adventure exploring beautiful Florence.

Luca’s Restaurant has earned its first Michelin Star, and we quickly discovered that the recognition is very well deserved when we went there for dinner.

Chef Paulo Airaudo brings an international perspective shaped by global influences and a wholehearted appreciation for Florentine culture. His menus evolve with the seasons, offering a sensory journey of inventive pairings and textures.

Each plate is a work of art with flavours that linger in your memory long after the meal ends. Dining here feels celebratory, as if each bite pulls you deeper into a story of creativity, heritage, and passion.

La Gemma Café offers a different but equally enchanting experience. The courtyard setting is luminous, peaceful, and infused with social warmth; it’s where guests gather for brunch, aperitivo, or a leisurely afternoon among plush seating and golden light.

Seasonal dishes embody refined Italian comfort, while Pintxos, created by Chef Airaudo, adds a playful, inventive touch inspired by Basque cuisine (interpreted through an Italian lens). The cocktails are works of craft, mixed with precision and fresh ingredients, each one balanced and beautiful.

On Saturday night, our incredible meal consisted of:

• Cocktails:

  • Don’t Look At Me (named after the film Uninterrupted): My cocktail of choice, with Pisco Tabernero and saké, green apple and celery fresh press, Leche de Tigre, lime juice, and passion fruit syrup.

  • Droog Penicillin (named after the film A Clockwork Orange): Mariantonietta’s cocktail of choice, with Bulleit bourbon, ginger honey mix, fig leaf liquor Denis Zoppi, and a ginger beer top up.

• Appetizers:

  • Hummus and Vegetables: My appetizer of choice, consisting of chickpea hummus , chives, and olive oil with fresh seasonal vegetables chilled on ice.

  • Fried Battered Prawns: Mariantonietta's appetizer of choice, served with a sriracha mayonnaise and pico de gallo.

• Mains:

  • Vegetarian Club Sandwich: My dish of choice, filled with grilled zucchini in oil, lettuce, tomaro, scarmoza, and mayonnaise, served with a side of French fries.

  • Linguini With Sea Urchin: Mariantonietta's dish of choice, though not on the menu, as they were happily able to accommodate a garlic allergy!

• Dessert:

  • Warm Apple Tart: My dessert of choice, with vanilla custard and whipped cream.

  • Dark Chocolate Cake: Mariantonietta's dessert of choice, with a warm raspberry coulis.

There is no denying that both restaurants enrich this boutique hotel in Florence’s identity—they become places where travellers taste Florence, not simply observe it.

While visiting this space, expect to linger longer each time. Whether it’s a cappuccino that tastes like velvet, an evening of pintxos that sends off fireworks on the taste buds, or the artistry behind Luca’s tasting menu, every visit will become a highlight of your weekend.
